Homeschooling
My son discovered a glitch in the Maine Child Labor Laws that hurt homeschoolers.
At the time, children under the age of 17 still subject to the Compulsory School Attendance Law were not allowed to be employed DURING THE HOURS when their public school was in session.
This has nothing to do with a homeschooler’s schedule, but it was preventing homeschoolers from having jobs at prime times during the workday (when other students could not work).
About a year later, I learned of a public hearing on the new rules for the Child Labor Laws, and I attended. To my surprise, some of the same elected officials from the Education Committee were also on the Labor Committee -- the same legislator who had been so helpful to homeschooling.
Once I explained the issue, they asked if I had any proposed wording to fix the problem. I did. And they fixed it that day.
